Su Blackwell- Books as art

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Some time back I was looking for different kinds of books for a project and I stumbled on is amazing artist/sculptor. Su Blackwell is an unusually talented artist who uses an unusual medium to create art. She uses books. And makes delicate, magical creations that tell their own stories. Books that once spoke through words, now speak through form.
The Quarterly March 2007

"Paper has been used for communication since its invention; either between humans or in an attempt to communicate with the spirit world. I employ this delicate, accessible medium and use irreversible, destructive processes to reflect on the precariousness of the world we inhabit and the fragility of our life, dreams and ambitions." - Su Blackwell
Vogue Dec 2006
The Secret Garden, 2006
The wintry world of Ice

The land of Far Beyond ( what I wouldn't give to see any of these pieces for real)

The 12 dancing Princesses, 2007

Margater and Marjorie, 2008
